Lismore City Council – Northern Rivers Waste

Lismore City Council – Northern Rivers Waste

Northern Rivers Waste was established in 2000 as a business unit of Lismore City Council to undertake its waste operations. We manage three waste facilities within the Local Government Area including the Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre, the Nimbin Transfer Station and the Brewster Street Drop-off Centre. In addition to these facilities, we also manage all domestic collections and have a significant commercial collection business.

The Lismore Recycling and Recovery Centre is a regionally significant facility that includes a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF), a Resource Recovery Facility (RRF), a composting facility, the Lismore Revolve Shop, a construction and demolition recovery area, Environmental Education Centre, Community Recycling Centre and the Lismore Rainforest Botanic Gardens. The Lismore Recycling & Recovery Centre accepts waste materials from other neighbouring Councils and is becoming a regional hub of recycling and organics processing.

lismore-city-council-logoLismore City Council is the first council in Australia to achieve organic certification for compost made from kerbside food and garden waste. We achieved the certification through Australian Organic by putting in place new screening processes to remove plastics and other inorganic materials from the kerbside waste as well as stringent product testing and cleaning/hygiene controls. This means organic producers from right across the Northern Rivers can purchase compost from us to utilise on their crops while maintaining their organic certification status.
